Barnett Named GSU Student-Athlete of the Week

Tra Barnett is this week's GSU Student-Athlete of the Week.

ATLANTA -- Georgia State running back Tra Barnett is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week after breaking the GSU's single-game, season and career rushing records to lead the Panthers to bowl eligibility with their fourth straight victory, 52-33 over Troy.

The senior from Elberton, Ga., rushed for a school-record 242 yards and two touchdowns against the Trojans. In doing so, he became Georgia State's career rushing leader with 1,631 yards, passing Travis Evans (1,500, 2010-13), and he took sole possession of the GSU career record with 15 career rushing touchdowns. He was also honored as the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week.

With 928 yards on the year, he broke the Georgia State single-season record previously held by Donald Russell (747 in 2012).

Barnett's 242 yards shattered the school record of 201 yards by Russell vs. Rhode Island in 2012. He broke the record with a 41-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-1 with one minute to play to seal the victory.

He has topped the 100-yard mark in a GSU-record four straight games and now has a season-record five 100-yard games in 2019 and six in his career, which equals Russell for the GSU career mark.

Barnett's outburst helped the Panthers rush for a team-record 390 yards against a Troy defense that entered the game ranked No. 11 in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 93.3 yards per game.

Georgia State has broken it's single-game rushing record three times in the last four games, and the Panthers have already topped last year's record rushing total with 2,058 yards on the season.

The Panthers are off this week before returning to action on Nov. 9 at ULM (5 p.m. ET). Georgia State's next home game is Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Panthers host undefeated and nationally-ranked Appalachian State at 2 p.m. at Georgia State Stadium.
