BOONE, N.C.-Georgia State could not overcome 14 3-pointers by Appalachian State and saw its eight-game win streak snapped with a 77-72 loss at the Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Georgia State (16-8, 9-3 Sun Belt) lost for the third-straight time in Boone despite shooting 53.4 percent from the floor. Freshman D'Marcus Simonds scored a team-high 16 points, while junior Isaiah Williams added 15.
Appalachian State (7-16, 2-10 Sun Belt) was led by Patrick Good who scored 15 points, knocking down five 3-pointers. Ronshad Shabazz added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jake Babic and Emarius Logan each scored 10 points.
Georgia State held the Mountaineers to just 36.9 percent shooting, but the Panthers went 5-of-15 from the free throw line and Appalachian State hit 14-of-36 from 3-point range.
The Panthers eight-game winning streak had been tied for the eighth-longest in the country and tied for third-longest in program history. The loss also snapped the Panthers four-game road winning streak.
“At the end of the day, you just cannot go 5-of-15 from the free throw line and expect to win,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “Offensively we played well and drove the ball to the basket exactly the way we wanted to. The good thing about this team is I know we will bounce back and we will be ready for Monday night.”
The Panthers outscored the Mountaineers 38-18 in the paint, but turned the ball over 18 times.
Georgia State took an early 8-3 lead before Shabazz knocked down back to back 3-pointers to give the Mountaineers an 11-10 lead with 16:04 to play.
The Panthers led 34-28 with 2:01 to play, before Appalachian State went on a 7-0 run to take just its second lead of the game, 35-34, with 52.5 seconds to play.
Devin Mitchell responded with a 3-pointer to retake the lead for Georgia State which went into the locker room with a 39-35 lead.
Shooting 50.0 percent in the first half, the Panthers led by as many as eight points and trailed for just 21 seconds.
On a 3-pointer by Jordan Session with 11:49 to play, Georgia State matched its largest-lead of the game, 56-48.
Appalachian State responded with a 12-3 run to take a 60-59 lead with 9:48 to play.
The Mountaineers finally took more than a single-possession lead on a 3-pointer by Good with 2:33 to play to take a 72-67 lead. Senior Jeremy Hollowell would knock down a 3-pointer on the next possession, but the Panthers would never get closer than two.
Hollowell just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Dennis matched a season-high with 10 points. He scored a career-high 18 points in Boone last year.
Isaac Johnson just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds for Appalachian State.
Georgia State will make the trip to Conway, S.C., on Sunday to continue its road trip at Coastal Carolina on Monday night at 7 p.m.
