MOBILE, Ala. – Georgia State lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at South Alabama. The Jaguars took Game 1 7-0 and won Game 2 5-2. The two sides will play Sunday at 1 p.m. EST for the final game of the series.
Game 1 | GSU 0, USA 7
South Alabama scored one in the first thanks to a GSU error in the infield. The Jaguars then exploded for six runs in the second inning on five hits. The big blow came on a bases-loaded triple off the bat of Amanda Minihan.
Amanda Chance entered the game to pitch in the second inning and tossed 4.1 scoreless innings for GSU. The freshman was effective, using two strikeouts to work around three hits and two walks, keeping South Alabama off the board.
Game 2 | GSU 2, USA 5
Georgia State got off to a much better start in Game 2. The Panthers got three hits in the first inning, matching the total from the previous game. Reagan Morgan kicked things off with a single to center and she came home on a Kensey Caldwell double to right-center.
South Alabama tied it up with three hits of their own in the bottom half of the first. The Jaguars took the lead in the third with back-to-back doubles and added on with a solo home run, groundout and RBI-single in the fifth to go on top 5-1.
GSU sent the tying run to the plate in the sixth as Ivie Drake stepped into the box with the bases loaded. The sophomore catcher drew a five-pitch walk to record an RBI and bring the Panthers to within three. Morgan then jumped on the first pitch and lined one hard, but right at the shortstop to end the inning.
GSU outhit USA in Game 2 with 10 hits compared to the Jags' nine. It was only the third time all year the Panthers have been defeated when outhitting their opponent. Mallory Koepke had a good day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a triple.
