ATLANTA – Down 1-0 in the sixth to crosstown rival Kennesaw State, Morgan Brown came through with a game-tying RBI-single followed by a walkoff RBI-single in the eighth to give Georgia State its fifth win in a row.
If you keep fighting, working hard and doing the right things, good things happen,” head coach Roger Kincaid said. “It's a team game and it's not always the same person that steps up for us. Tonight our pitching and defense put us in position to win it and then Morgan stepped up and got it done.”
Two weeks ago, it was Brown that tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a single against Georgia Tech. Last week against St. John's, Brown once again came through with a game-tying single in the seventh inning. Tonight was just another Wednesday for Brown, as she not only tied the game in the sixth, but then won it for GSU in her next at bat in the eighth. She ripped a single in to center field to score Taylor Anderson from second and start the celebration at home plate. Brown's single in the sixth was a bouncer back up the middle that just barely snuck over the pitcher's glove. The junior outfielder has six RBI this season, four of which have tied or won the game for the Panthers in the sixth inning or later.
Georgia State's pitching was superb Wednesday night. Annie Davis got the start and went six innings while allowing one run on four hits. Katie Worley entered the game in relief and recorded five strikeouts in just two innings. Worley earned the win to improve to 5-0 this season.
Georgia State has now won six in a row over the Owls and takes the lead in the all-time series with a 17-16 record. After an 0-5 start this season, the Panthers have since gone 10-2 with their only losses coming against No. 5 Alabama and Villanova. GSU travels to Auburn, Ala. this weekend to play four games at the Wilson/Demarini Classic. The Panthers will face Indiana on Friday, Bryant on Saturday and No. 3/4 Auburn twice on Sunday. Game 1 of Sunday's double-header will be shown on the SEC Network with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. EST.
