Panthers Fall at Mississippi State 82-60

STARKVILLE, Miss.-Georgia State could not overcome 18 turnovers and 13 Mississippi State 3-pointers as the Panthers fell to the Bulldogs 82-60 at Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Junior Isaiah Williams led the Panthers with 16 points and five rebounds.

Georgia State (4-3) led or shared the lead for more than half of the opening 20 minutes, but shot just 33.3 percent in the second half, going 2-of-10 from 3-point range, while turning the ball over 10 times.

Mississippi State (6-2) was led by Lamar Peters who scored 24 points, going 9-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 from 3-point range. He was one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures as Mario Kegler added 16 points, knocking down four from 3-point range.

“I thought Mississippi State shot the ball really well and we played the worst game we have played all year,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “They made a bunch of 3-pointers and if you do that you are going to win a lot of games. We will get home, regroup and get ready for final exams and our next game on Saturday.”

Hunter, who was looking to make history, will have to wait until next Saturday to move ahead of former coach Bob Reinhart for the school's record of 107 wins. With the next win, he will join an elite group of six other coaches who are the all-time wins leader at multiple programs.

Mississippi State took an early 8-3 lead before the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. Georgia State pushed the lead to 16-10 six minutes into the game before the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game 16-16.

Williams knocked down his first three 3-point attempts. He has scored 53 points in the last three games.

Peters led Mississippi State in the first half, at one point scoring 14-straight points for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs went into the locker room leading 44-36 after hitting their final three shots of the half, while Georgia State went cold, missing seven of its final nine.

Mississippi State used a couple of runs early in the second half to take control of the game. Leading 49-40, the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run while holding Georgia State scoreless for more than four minutes to build a 55-40 lead.

After a 3-point play by Simonds, the Bulldogs used another 7-0 run to push the lead to 62-43 with 11:50 to play.

Georgia State attempted to make one last run trailing by 23, but a 7-0 stretch was all the Panthers could manage to cut the lead to 71-55 with 6:40 remaining.

Senior Justin Seymour finished with 10 points for the Panthers, while senior Jeremy Hollowell led Georgia State with seven rebounds. Senior Isaiah Dennis added eight points for the Panthers.

Quinndary Weatherspoon added 14 points for the Bulldogs, while IJ Ready added 11 and five assists.

Georgia State will have a week off from games for final exams before returning to the court next Saturday to face Georgia Southwestern at 2 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena. Tickets can be purchased by calling 404-413-4020.
