JACKSONVILLE, ALA.- After their last game was cancelled due to lightning delays, the Panthers opened up this weekend by posting a 4-0 shutout win at Jacksonville State. The team is now 4-0 for the season.
GSU maintained control of the ball for much of the game, outshooting JSU 18-5. The teams went 12-2 for shots on goal.
Ashley Nagy scored early in the first half, putting the Panthers up 1-0 within ten minutes of the start of the match. Nagy was assisted by Suzanne Arafa.
After heading into the half with no other goals scored, the Panthers came back strong and continued to outshoot the Gamecocks. Suzanne Arafa had the second goal of the game with 32 minutes left. She was assisted by Taina Anglade.
Back-to-back goals by Alexis Thomas and Caitlin Ray with less than five minutes left to play sealed the win for the Panthers. This was Thomas' second goal of the season and Ray's first.
The shutout was GSU's third in the four matches of the season. Christa Fox played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded two saves Friday night. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 13-2 overall this year.
"The girls performed really well, especially in the second half. We're finding ways to successfully sustain our attacks and it's paying off," head coach Derek Leader said of the win.
The team heads back to Panthersville on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against Tennessee Tech.
