ATLANTA - Georgia State rallied to earn a 2-1 victory over Oglethorpe Saturday evening at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Visiting Oglethorpe scored with its only shot on goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Georgia State equalized two minutes before halftime thanks to freshman Max Hemmings' first goal as a Panther off a nice 1-2 play with veteran Amiri Abraham.
GSU maintained its momentum in the second half, controlling possession before finally taking the lead in the 66th minute, thanks to freshman Kwaku Adu, who also scored in the team's 10-0 rout on Tuesday vs. Georgia Southwestern.
Andrew Thompson played a nice through ball to pick out the freshman forward who calmly rounded the keeper and dinked the ball into the open net.
Georgia State could have scored more off its attack perhaps, but were denied by Oglethorpe goalkeeper Vaughn Moore three times.
GSU played 22 total players, including seven newcomers, on the roster in getting good work before the regular season.
Two solid exhibition performances will make head coach Brett Surrency's decision on the starting eleven for the opening match difficult. GSU opens the season Friday, Aug. 28 at Jacksonville.
