ATLANTA – Lauren Coleman drove in four, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Georgia State's rally fell short against UL Monroe on senior day. The Warhawks held on for the 9-6 win as GSU drops to 32-19 overall and 11-10 in Sun Belt play.
“This is one of the greatest senior classes I have ever been a part of as head coach,” Roger Kincaid said. “I am disappointed that we were unable to get the win but I am excited to have one more home game against Florida State and a series at Georgia Southern. We look forward to building some momentum ahead of the conference tournament.”
Seniors Callie Alford, Ashley Christy, Emily Clay, Coleman, Eron Milton and Taylor Scarpantonio were honored prior to first pitch for their commitment and dedication to the softball program as they played their final home conference game of their careers.
Coleman finished with a double, a home run and a run scored to go with her four RBI. Alford recorded two hits, scored twice and drove in one, while Morgan Brown was 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Kensey Caldwell and Ivie Drake also finished with two hits.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one on Alford's RBI single and Coleman's two-RBI double. However, the lead was short lived as the Warhawks four answered to take a 4-3 lead after three.
After neither team scored in the fourth of the fifth frame, ULM extended its lead to 8-3 with four runs in the top of the sixth. Georgia State threatened in the bottom of the frame by loading the bases but a great leaping catch robbed Christy of a base hit and ended the inning.
After UL Monroe added a single run in the top of the seventh, the Panthers rallied to score three in the bottom of the frame but it was not enough. Coleman blasted a two-run homer and Brown drove in one. However, with the tying run at the plate a pop-up ended the game and gave the Warhawks the 9-6 win.
