SAN MARCOS, Texas – Kensey Caldwell hit a two-run home run but it was not enough as Georgia State dropped a nine-inning 5-4 heart breaker to Texas State in the series finale Sunday, March 15. The loss snapped the Panthers program record 15-game winning streak. GSU is now 18-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
"I am proud of the way the team fought back from a 4-0 defit to force extra innings," head coach Roger Kincaid said. "Once again they showed how mentally tough they are. We had serveral chances to go ahead but we could not come up with the timely hit."
"Hats off to Texas State and congratulations to coach Woodard on her 500th career win," Kincaid said. "She is a class act and I have a lot of respect for her and her program."
Caldwell drove in two while Ashley Christy and Lauren Coleman each finished with one RBI. Taylor Anderson and Christy both finished with two hits and a run scored. Katie Worley suffered her first loss of the season (3-1) after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing just one run in relief.
Texas State jumped in front early with two runs on Kendall Wiley's two-out single in the bottom of the first. The Bobcats doubled their lead to 4-0 with two runs in the bottom third on Courtney Harris' home run.
Georgia State pull two runs back in the top of the fifth on Caldwell's fourth homer of the season. Christy started the inning with a lead-off double before Caldwell blasted the ball over the left-field wall. GSU added one more in the sixth to make it a 4-3 game on Christy's RBI single.
The Panthers then tied it in the top of the seventh on an infield grounder by Coleman. The Bobcats were held scoreless by Worley in the bottom half so the teams headed for extra innings. After a scoreless eighth inning, Texas State secure the walk-off win when Harris scored on Wiley's game-winning single.
Georgia State returns to the field on Tuesday, March 17 when the Panthers host the Mocs of Chattanooga. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
