GSU Falls In Conference Championship Down a Man

BOONE, N.C. – Hartwick defeated Georgia State 3-0 in the Sun Belt Men's Soccer Championship to earn the automatic NCAA berth. Hartwick defended its Sun Belt title of last year and earned the school's 25th all-time NCAA spot.

Hartwick got on the board early with a goal 5:30 into the match when two players got into the GSU box and passed for a close-in goal.  The Hawks added a second goal at 32:34 when a pass found Jamie O'Grady inches in front of the net and he easily headed it home to make it 2-0. GSU thought a Hartwick hand ball in the box should have been called in the first half, but like the rest of the day, the Panthers got no luck with the call.

Hartwick finished the scoring with a goal on a long ball at 58:58 as Marc Berry scored when the GSU keeper came out high to try to make a stop in time to prevent the play.

For the match, Hartwick had a 13-8 shot advantage, with a 7-6 shots on goal lead. GSU had a corner kick advantage 11-3.

The match was stopped often and regularly as each team was whistled for 13 fouls (26 total). GSU drew a whopping seven yellow cards and one red card. The red card caused first-team all-conference midfielder Eddie Wilding to depart the match in the first half and GSU play the rest of the way 11 on 10. The TV broadcaster indicated it was probably for an elbow thrown during contact, but the play wasn't near the ball or seen by the TV. Hartwick had three yellow cards to make it 10 total yellow cards to go with the 26 fouls.  By math comparison, GSU had 23 yellow cards in 17 matches all season long.

Hartwick will enter the NCAAs at 11-5-3 and find out its opponent on Monday. Last year, Hartwick bowed out to Penn State, 2-1. GSU finishes 9-8-1 (with the tie being the shootout win over Georgia Southern to advance to the championship).

The Panthers have just five seniors: Conor Acheson, Eddie Wilding, Nomis Cisic, Andy Anglade and Cory Plasker.

A trio of Panthers were named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team: Rashid Alarape, Nomis Cisic and Amiri Abraham.
