ATLANTA – Kristina Stinson hammered home the match-winner Friday night, leading Georgia State (5-16, 1-10 SBC) to a 3-0 sweep over South Alabama (13-10, 7-5 SBC) for its first conference win of the season. The Panthers defeated the Jaguars 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.
“This was a total team effort,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “All year we've talked about controlling our side of the net and we did that tonight and played GSU volleyball. I am so excited for our consistent play against a strong South Alabama team.”
Georgia State entered the night on a six-match losing streak to South Alabama and a 12-match losing streak on the season. The Panthers ended both on with a dominant performance, outhitting the Jaguars .310 to .180. South Alabama had just four total team blocks after recording double-digits in each of its last two contests.
With USA only hitting 14 errors, Georgia State truly had to earn each set, something the team was able to do with a little help from several different players. Stinson led the team with 13 kills and senior Deidra Bohannon added 12 on a .294 hitting night. Freshman Shae Chapman finished with eight kills and fellow freshman Sarah Renner had a career-best 39 assists.
Set 2 was a tight set with the Panthers squeaking out a 25-23 win. Neither team ever had full control, as the biggest lead for either side was just three points. There were 16 ties in the set and eight lead changes, with GSU pulling away for good with the help of a kill from freshman Anna Rantala.
Georgia State is at home again on Saturday night as UL Lafayette visits the Sports Arena for a 6 p.m. match.
