GREENVILLE, S.C. – In a match defined by excellent goalkeeping, the Georgia State men's soccer team was defeated by the College of Charleston 2-0 Friday night in the first game of the Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament at Stone Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
In the first 22 minutes of the match both keepers recorded three saves as the Panthers and Cougars created quality scoring chances early.
- Jad Elkhalil tested Charleston's Brian Kilgallon first in the fourth minute but the Cougar goalkeeper made the save.
- In the 10th minute Tanner Clay fired a shot on goal but GSU's Cochran was there for the save.
- Four minutes later the Charleston's Erik Clark challenged Cochran again but the senior was up to the task to keep the match scoreless.
- Georgia State had a pair of chances in the 18th and 19th minutes but Kilgallon recorded two saves on two attempts by Jad Elkhalil.
- Cochran then made his third save of the half in the 22nd minute on another shot by Clay.
The Cougars finally found the back of the net in the 23rd minute when Tucker Coons headed home Clark's corner kick. Cochran was called into action again 10 minutes later and he saved Clark's shot to keep the Charleston lead at one.
Cochran recorded his fifth save of the first half in the 39th minute on a shot by Troy Patterson. The Panthers threatened in the 43rd minute but Kilgallon saved Rashid Alarape's effort.
- At the break, Charleston led 1-0 and held a slight edge in shots (8-6).
- Both teams took two corner kicks in the first half.
- Cochran had five saves and Kilgallon had four after 45 action-packed minutes.
Georgia State tested Kilgallon again less than a minute into the second half but he saved Jad Elkhalil's attempt. Cochran was then called on to make two saves on shots by Kye West and Xavier Rajpaul over the next three minutes.
The Panthers nearly tied the match in the 64th minute but Aaron Jones shot was too high and deflected off the crossbar. Kilgallon recorded another save in the 67th minute on a header by Jad Elkhalil. In the 72nd minute, Cochran made his eighth save of the match when he denied Coons' header.
However, in the 76th minute the Cougars doubled their lead when Nico Rittmeyer fired a first-time shot past Cochran off Daan Brinkman's cross. GSU continued to attack over the final 14 minutes but could not create a scoring chance and Charleston earned the 2-0 win.
- For the match the Cougars held an 18-13 shot advantage but the Panthers took one more corner kick (8-7).
- GSU's CJ Cochran finished with eight saves and Charleston's Brain Kilgallon recorded seven saves.
- Georgia State will return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3:30 p.m. against the tournament host Furman.
