COOKVILLE, Tenn. – Despite holding a 14-6 shot advantage the Georgia State women's soccer team was defeated by Tennessee Tech 1-0 Friday night at the Tech Soccer Field in Cookville, Tenn. The Panthers are still searching for their first win of the season and will play at Belmont on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m.
“You can't win games if you miss your opportunities,” head coach Derek Leader said after the disappointing loss. “We had loads of chances that we missed, including probably five sitters that were squandered away.”
GSU tested the Golden Eagles' defense several times during the first 25 minutes.
- In the 3rd minute Callie O'Connor fired an attempt on goal but Tennessee Tech goalkeeper and former Panther Rebecca Toler made the save.
- O'Connor had another chance two minutes later but her effort was wide of the right post.
- Whitney Ravan tested Toler in the 19th minute but the Golden Eagle keeper made the save to keep the match scoreless.
- In the 23rd minute Ashley Nagy tried her luck but her shot deflected off the post.
- Ravan then fired the rebound on target but Toler was there to make her third save of the first half.
Both teams attempted one shot over the final 20 minutes but neither was on target. After 45 minutes the score was still tied 0-0 despite the Panthers holding a 7-3 shot advantage.
Tennessee Tech had the first scoring chance of the second half in the 51st minute but Abi Gearing's effort was wide of the left post. Gearing redeemed herself less than a minute later when she fired a shot past GSU goalkeeper Christa Fox and into the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Nagy had Georgia State's first attempt of the second half in 54th minute but her effort was wide left. Nagy had another shot saved by Toler in the 61st minute as the Panthers attacked in search of an equalizer.
In the 74th and 75th minutes Toler recorded a pair of saves on efforts by Taina Anglade and Ravan. Nagy attempted another shot in the 79th minute but it was high and off target. GSU's last chance came in the 88th minute but Anglade's header was wide of the left post and the match ended 1-0.
- The Panthers outshot the Golden Eagles 14-6, including six on target.
- Tennessee Tech goalkeeper Rebecca Toler earned the shutout after recording six saves.
- Georgia State attempted four corner kicks and the Golden Eagles took two.
GSU returns to the field on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. against Belmont in Nashville, Tenn.
