Softball Quartet Named All-Conference-Team Opens Tourney Wednesday

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia State softball juniors Callie Alford, Ashley Christy and Lauren Coleman along with senior Kaitlyn Medlam received All-Sun Belt Conference honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Coleman was named to the first team while Alford, Christy and Medlam were named to the second team as the Panthers prepare to open the conference tournament on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Coleman, a native of Marietta, Ga., started all 55 regular season games at first base and led the team in batting average (.399), hits (61), doubles (13), RBI (47), on-base percentage (.523) and walks (38). She was also second with 34 runs scored, nine home runs and a .660 slugging percentage. In the conference standings Coleman ranks in the top five in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, RBI and doubles. She leads the conference in walks. Coleman won two Sun Belt Player-of-the-Week awards in 2014. She is a three-time all-conference selection and has twice been named to the first team.

Hailing from Conyers, Ga., Alford was named to the All-Sun Belt second team as a catcher. She finished the regular season with a .309 batting average while hitting nine doubles, one triple, six homers and driving in 25 runs. Alford was third on the team in runs scored (31) and walks (24). Alford has been named to the all-conference second team after each of her three seasons at Georgia State. She is also a two-time NFCA All-Region second team selection at catcher.

Christy, from Waxhaw, N.C., was voted onto the second team as an at-large selection. The outfielder played in 53 of 55 games including 37 starts in centerfield. She was tied with Alford for third on the team with a .309 batting average. Christy stole a team-high 12 bases, which was tied for the 10th-highest total in the Sun Belt. She scored 30 runs and hit three doubles, two triples and five home runs, a new single-season career high. This is Christy's third all-conference honor after being named to the All-CAA second team and CAA All-Rookie team as a freshman in 2012.

A native of Bethlehem, Ga., Medlam led Georgia State in every pitching category during the 2014 regular season. She appeared in 44 games, the most of any pitcher in the Sun Belt. Medlam finished with a 2.36 ERA, made 31 starts, won 20 games and pitched 213.2 innings which all ranked in the top-five in the conference standings. Her 44 appearances this season are tied for the most in a single season by a GSU pitcher. Medlam ranks first in career wins (62), fourth in career strikeouts (442), fifth in career innings pitched (592.1) and eighth in career ERA (2.29) in program history.

The Panthers blasted 59 home runs during the regular season to set a new single-season school record. Sophomore Taylor Anderson led the way with 14 homers which was tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference and was tied for the second highest single-season total in GSU history. As a team, Georgia State is hitting .291 which is third highest team season batting average in school history.

Georgia State finished the regular season 30-25 to earn the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, clinch Georgia State's eighth consecutive season with 30 wins or more and the 21st season with 30 or wins in GSU's 31 year softball history.  At 4 p.m., Georgia State will face the winner of the tournament's opening game featuring No. 6 seed UL Monroe and No. 7 seed Troy. The Panthers won two of three games in both regular-season series against the Trojans and Warhawks. If GSU wins it will play Thursday at 3 p.m. against No. 2 seed South Alabama.

The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship begins on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. ET. All tournament games will be played at Lamson Park in Lafayette, La. and will be streamed for free on SunBeltSports.org. Saturday's championship game begins at 4 p.m. ET and will be available for viewing on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
