Panthers Drop Second Straight at Ole Miss, 9-1

Oxford, Miss. -- Georgia State dropped its second straight game at No. 26 Mississippi, falling 9-1 Saturday afternoon at Swayze Field.

The Panthers (3-3) led 1-0 through four innings before Ole Miss (6-0) put up five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Nic Wilson led off the top of the second inning with a double to the left field corner. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Raffield and then scored on Chris Triplett's opposite field single to right. That early run put Ole Miss behind for the first time this season.

Georgia State starter Andrew Fessler (0-1) opened the game with four scoreless innings before Auston Bousfield led off the fifth with a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. With one out, the Rebels got back-to-back singles from Will Allen and Preston Overbey before Colby Bortles belted a three-run homer to right center for a 4-1 Ole Miss lead.

The Rebels added another run off reliever Jerry Stuckey to lead 5-1 after five. Ole Miss followed with four runs in the sixth. Aidan McLaughlin came on to record the final seven outs for the Panthers.

"When you are playing a team like Ole Miss in a close game, a big inning like that can create huge separation," GSU head coach Greg Frady said. "In the game they only scored in two innings, but those two were multiple-run innings. Those are hard to overcome when they are running out some really good pitchers.

"Andrew Fessler gave us a good start, Aidan McLaughlin pitched well at the end, and Nic Wilson had a really solid day offensively."

For the second straight day, Wilson, the senior first baseman, collected two hits for the Panthers with a pair of doubles.

Ole Miss starter Christian Trent (2-0) allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings. He walked none and struck out six. Josh Laxer pitched the final two frames for the Rebels.

The series concludes with a 2:30 p.m. ET game Sunday.
