Georgia State Falls to Hartwick 2-1

ATLANTA – In the Panthers' Sun Belt home opener, the Georgia State men's soccer team was defeated by Hartwick 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the GSU Soccer Complex.

Rashid Alarape gave GSU the lead in the 7th minute off a pass by Eddie Wilding. However, an own goal in the 19th minute tied the match 1-1 and the Hawks scored in the 69th minute to complete the comeback.

  • The Panthers drop to 6-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
  • Hartwick improves to 3-8-4 this season and are 2-1-1 in the Sun Belt.

The Hawks had the first chance of the match in the 5th minute. Jack Miller fired a shot on target but CJ Cochran made the save for Georgia State.

Two minutes later the Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead when Alarape scored his third goal of the season.

  • Wilding won the ball back in his defensive third and dribbled towards midfield.
  • He then found Alarape who outran a Hawk defender and finished past keeper Tom Buckner one-on-one.

The lead was short lived as Hartwick equalized in the 19th minute. Marc Russell took the ball down the right flank and played a dangerous cross into the 18-yard box. GSU's Everick Little was trying to hold Chris Walter off the ball but unfortunatly the Panther defender headed the ball past Cochran and into his own net to tie the match at one.

The Hawks had the next two shots but both were blocked. GSU's next opportunity was in the 29th minute.

  • Andy Anglade fired a powerful shot on target from the left side of the 18-yard box.
  • However, Buckner was able to make a diving save on Anglade's low effort.

Neither team attempted another shot over the final 16 minutes and the first half ended with the score tied 1-1.

  • The Hawks outshot the Panthers 4-2 during the first 45 minutes.
  • Hartwick also took more corner kicks (3-1).

Georgia State started the second half quickly on Jake Bingham's header in the 48th minute but his effort was wide right. Hartwick had the next two chances but both were off target.

The Panthers had a great opportunity to retake the lead in the 57th minute.

  • Following a Hawk foul, a dangerous free kick was sent into the box by GSU.
  • Stephen McGill was first to the ball but his header was too high from six yards out.

Hartwick took the lead in the 69th minute on Jhevaughn Beckford's first goal of the season.

  • Walter fired a low shot from the left that deflected off the right post.
  • The rebound fell to Beckford who slotted it into the net past Cochran to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

GSU took the next three shots but none were on target. Hartwick then had two chances to extend its lead over the next two minutes.

  • First Cochran denied Nick Hills in 77th minute.
  • Then in the 79th minute, the senior keeper saved Beckford's header at the far post.

Georgia State had two chances over the final 10 minutes but could not tie the match to force overtime as Hartwick secured the 2-1 win.

  • Teams combined to for 15 shots over the final 45 minutes.
  • The Hawks were whistled for 10 fouls and five total yellow cards were shown in the second half.
  • GSU's next match is Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Duke in Durham, N.C.
