Tallahassee, Fla. - Lane Carico and Katie Madewell, the No. 1 pair for the Georgia State sand volleyball team, won the Florida State pairs tournament to earn their second tournament win of the year.
The pair went a perfect 6-0 over the weekend, with four of those wins coming in the double-elimination gold bracket tournament. Carico and Madewell defeated Florida State's Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom 21-19, 21-12 in the finals. Carico and Madewell also defeated Pardon and Wickstrom in the quarterfinals 21-19, 21-19.
In their semifinal match, Georgia State's top pair took down Charleston's Lizzie Theesfeld and Melissa Morello 21-10, 21-12. Carico and Madewell are now 27-5 with one dual against Louisiana-Monroe remaining in the inaugural season schedule.
Georgia State's No. 2 pair of Sara Olivova and Jansen Button also played in the gold bracket. They went 1-1 in a pair of three-setters on Sunday, first defeating Florida State's Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels 21-16, 22-24, 15-7. The duo then lost to Charleston's Theesfeld and Morello 16-21, 21-14, 15-10.
In the silver bracket, the Panthers' No. 3 pair of Milani Pickering and Katelyn Rawls lost to Florida State's Mallory Kiley and Fatma Yildirim 21-18, 21-17.
The No. 4 pair for the Panthers, Alexis Elmurr and Molly Smestad, fell to Charleston's Emily Shelton and Catey Warren 21-17, 21-12 on Sunday. Georgia State's No. 5 pair of Alexis Townsend and Karlee Kavanaugh also lost to Charleston. They fell to Sloane White and Taeler Davis 21-16, 21-14.
In an exhibition match, Nikki Senopoulos and Kaitlynn Hufstetler were defeated by Florida State's Kayla Joyce and Lexy Ryan 21-17, 21-17.
Georgia State has one dual remaining on their inaugural season schedule. The Panthers will travel to Monroe, La., on Saturday, April 27 to conclude the first season of sand volleyball. The dual will start at 2 p.m.
