PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. — Kaitlyn Medlam threw the third perfect game in school history as Georgia State (25-15) split a midweek doubleheader against Georgia Southern (19-23) at the Heck Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The previous two perfect games were combined efforts between two pitchers. Both came during the 2008 season and each lasted five innings. The last Panther no-hitter came back in 2011 when McCall Langford blanked Towson.
Game 1: Georgia State 8, Georgia Southern 0 (6 inn.)
Medlam retired all 18 batters she faced in 6.0 innings pitched and struck out five. The game is the third shutout of the season for the junior.
Despite allowing no hits against them, the Panthers compiled 13 hits, drew five walks and stole four bases. Georgia State scored four runs in the third, two in the sixth and one in each the second and fifth.
Four Panthers had multiple hits in the contest, including Jessica Clifton who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Jordan Brown also had a pair of RBI on a hit and a run scored. The only extra-base hit in the game was a double hit by Lauren Coleman in the seventh inning.
The Panthers jumped on the board first in the second inning when Brown hit an RBI ground out to the pitcher to score Ashley Christy from third.
Coleman, Christy and Brown then hit RBI singles as part of a four run third inning in which the Panthers batted around. Clifton added a bases loaded walk to push across another run in the frame.
Taylor Anderson hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to score Brown. Clifton knocked in two runs on a single in the seventh inning to complete the run-rule victory for the Panthers.
Coleman drew her 37th walk of the season, which is only six bases on balls away from the single-season school record of 43. With two stolen bases in the game, Christy is now a team-leading 13-of-14 in stolen base attempts on the year.
Game 2: Georgia Southern 5, Georgia State 4
Leading 4-1 entering the seventh inning, Georgia State allowed four runs to drop the second game of the doubleheader. The Panthers were outhit in the contest 11-7.
MeQuilla Franklin and Jordan Brown both hit home runs to drive the Panthers' offense. Brown also doubled to finish the game with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Clifton and Brown hit back-to-back singles. Franklin then hit a two run home run with Brown on base. Brown hit a solo shot in the sixth inning, the first of her career.
Medlam suffered the loss after allowing one run in the seventh inning in relief. Starter Katie Worley gave up only one run on six hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
Georgia State continues a seven-game homestand by hosting UNCW in a home series this weekend.
