Rock Hill, S.C.--The No. 52-ranked Georgia State women's
tennis team won all but one match en route to a 6-1 victory at Winthrop on
Saturday afternoon.
Georgia
State, led by sixth-year head coach Miha Lisac, evened its season record at 6-6 while Winthrop fell to 5-8. GSU swept the
doubles point and won five of six singles matches to win the match. GSU took a
2-1 lead in the all-time series against Winthrop.
Junior
Abigail Tere-Apisah, the Sun Belt Player of the Week, improved to 10-2 on the
season after she defeated Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema. Tere-Apisah won 3-2 after
Alkema was forced to retire due to an injury.
Sophomore
Chaimaa Roudami followed Tere-Apisah's victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 5
position. The win was her third singles victory in a row. Senior Whitney Byrd
clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 3 slot vs. Alice Garcia. It
was Byrd's third-consecutive singles victory.
Sophomore
Masa Grgan won 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 2 position and freshman Linn Timmermann
fought back for a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win
at the No. 4 slot.
GSU's
top doubles pair of Tere-Apisah and Grgan, the No. 51-ranked duo in the ITA
National Doubles rankings, won a 9-8 (10-3) match at the No. 1 position.
Graduate student Jocelyn Ffriend and Kozachenko clinched the doubles point with
an 8-5 win at the No. 2 slot. Roudami and Timmermann paired at No. 3 doubles to
win an 8-3 match to kick-off doubles play.
The
win kicked off a string of seven-consecutive road matches for the GSU women's
tennis team to close the regular-season. The Panthers next take on two
nationally-ranked teams in No. 70-ranked South Florida on Mar. 17 and No.
17-ranked Clemson on Mar. 19.
