ATLANTA--In an eight-hour
epic, juniors Thomas Cook and Robert Schulze won the decisive doubles match in
come-from-behind fashion to lead the No. 60-ranked Georgia State men's tennis
team to a 4-3 victory against College of Charleston on Saturday night.
GSU
(7-3) competed through the grueling 7-hour and 47-minute match only to tie the
College of Charleston (2-3) at 3-all. The match began with singles play with
the first team to reach four points earning the victory. Neither team could
gain the advantage as the match advanced to the doubles point. Seniors Victor
Valente and Lucas Santa notched a quick 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to set up the
No. 1 and 3 doubles matches as the deciding points.
Cook
and Schulze faced a 6-2 deficit in the No. 1 doubles match before the duo
mounted a comeback in the latter half of the match. The two fought back to tie
the match at 7-7 and force a tiebreaker to decide the doubles match and decide
the team outcome. The two came up clutch in the tiebreaker by winning 9-7 to
take the match.
Valente
and Santa Ana also put GSU on the board with singles victories at the No. 1 and
3 positions respectively. Valente won 7-5, 6-1 against Allanic Brice at the No.
1 spot while Santa Ana won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Schulze
also won his singles match 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 against College of Charleston's
Charlie Ghriskey.
The
Panthers host George Washington on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for a dual match.
GSU also hosts the unfinished singles portion of its dual match against South
