ATLANTA – The Georgia State volleyball team fell 3-0 to a high-powered squad from Clemson Thursday night at Georgia Tech's O'Keefe Gymnasium in the first match of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic.
With the loss, GSU fell to 2-9 on the season while Clemson improved to 9-2
The Panthers were led in scoring by senior Jamiee Freeman with five kills on the night. Freshmen Dede Bohannon and Sydney Hunsley, added four and sophomore Andrea Book posted three kills.
Emily Averbeck earned 11 digs in the contest while sophomore Andrea Ezell and freshman Eliza Zachary earned two block assists and a solo block.
Moneshia Simmons led Clemson and all players with 19 kills on the night while Tiger setter posted a match-best 28 assists.
Clemson took the first set 25-13 thanks to a late run. Georgia State started out the first set with a 5-2 run that included a block and a kill by Hunsley. The Panthers managed to tie the set at 7-7 after Averbeck found Freeman for a kill, but the Tigers offense outscored GSU 12-6 to close out the set.
The Tigers rallied to top GSU in the second set 25-21. A couple of early Clemson miscues gave GSU a 4-3 lead early in the second period and a block by Freeman and Zachary put GSU on top 12-11. However, an offensive mistake by GSU gave the Tigers a 20-19 lead and the Panthers were unable to regain the lead. Freeman and Book led the way offensively for GSU in the second period with a pair of kills each. Zachary finished the second period with two block assists and a solo rejection.
Clemson jumped out early and never looked back to take the third set 25-10.
The Panthers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they face crosstown rival Georgia Tech in the finale of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic. Live stat links are available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
