ATLANTA — The Georgia State volleyball team (2-4, 0-0 SBC) swept West Georgia (1-5, 0-0 ASUN) in three sets Saturday at GSU Sports Arena.
Akira Burt led the way with a match-high 10 kills on a .273 hitting clip, while Julie Arias added seven kills and a team-high four aces. Sigrun Jonsdottir paced the defense with nine digs and three service aces, and Mina Olgar was a force at the net with a match-high six blocks. Annelore Engels ran the offense with a team-high 10 assists, and Sophia Johnson posted a well-rounded stat line of eight kills and a match-high 12 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The two programs battled through four ties and traded the lead once before Georgia State pulled ahead for good. The Panthers' biggest cushion came at 13-8, and though West Georgia twice pulled within one down the stretch, Johnson closed out the set with a kill and a service ace to seal a 25-21 win.
SET 2 | Georgia State turned it up a level in the second, building a 6-3 lead behind Johnson before pulling away for good. The Panthers' offense hit .320 in the set, and a 4-0 run late extended their advantage to 12 points before closing out a 25-13 win.
SET 3 | West Georgia jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, but Georgia State answered, tying the set at 8-8 before taking the lead for good at 9-8. The set featured four lead changes in all before the Panthers pulled away late, closing out the match with a 25-18 win to take the sweep.
