Softball Beats JMU 7-4 in CAA Tournament

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Georgia State (37-16, 14-7) compiled twelve hits to defeat James Madison (29-25, 15-6) 7-4 on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2012 CAA tournament.

The Panthers scored one in the third and fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Dukes plated single runs in the fourth and sixth, before starting a late rally with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Paige Nowacki hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. The blast was Nowacki's tenth of the season and the twentieth of her career, both of which are in the top ten in the GSU record books.

McCall Langford came close to the complete game for her eleventh win of the season and Kaitlyn Medlam collected the last out of the contest for her fourth save.

Jessica Clifton, Callie Alford and Whitney Phillips each had two hits as the Panthers struck for a total of 12 in the game. The Dukes had 11 hits of their own, but were limited after stranding nine runners on base.

Alford's RBI double broke open a scoreless contest in the third. That hit drove in Audrey Mason from second after Mason and Cassie Boese reached on singles.

James Madison's designated player Sarah Mooney had two hits, including a double and a two-run home run in the seventh, and scored two runs.

Georgia State advances to the winner's bracket to play host Hofstra tomorrow at noon. The Dukes will play Delaware later in the day in the elimination game.
