Softball Splits Opening Doubleheader at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. — Georgia State softball (33-13, 10-4) split a doubleheader at Delaware (11-36-1, 4-10) Saturday morning.

The loss snaps the Panthers' CAA winning streak at 10 games. It is also their first loss outside the state of Georgia in 10 contests.

Game One: GSU 7, Delaware 0

Seven runs in the sixth inning constituted all of the scoring in the opening game of the series. Georgia State earned their fourteenth shutout of the season.

The first seven GSU batters to the plate in the sixth inning notched hits. Lauren Coleman led off with the first triple of her career and Paige Nowacki followed with her 10th homer of the season.

Callie Alford and Emily Althafter added doubles in the inning. The Panthers had eight hits in the sixth and a total of 13 in the game. Nowacki, Alford and Jessica Clifton all had a pair of hits in the game.

Alana Thomas earned her eleventh win of the season by pitching five scoreless innings. Erin Collins allowed only a single hit in two innings of relief.

Game Two: Delaware 3, GSU 1

Kaitlyn Breneman hit a two run home run in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Blue Hens the win over the Panthers.

Jessica Clifton, Lauren Coleman and Ashley Christy each had two of Georgia States' seven hits in the losing effort. Coleman had the only extra-base hit for GSU with her ninth double of the season.

McCall Langford took the loss after allowing all three runs in 3.1 innings. Erin Collins did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Chenxi Jiao pitched six innings out of the bullpen to earn the win for Delaware.

Game three of the series will be played Sun., April 22 at the Delaware Softball Stadium at 12:00 p.m.
