PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. — Brenna Morrissey's walk-off home run highlighted a doubleheader sweep as Georgia State (30-12, 9-3) took two games from visiting Drexel (18-18, 3-7) Saturday afternoon at Bob Heck Field.
Ashley Chirsty ended the day going 5-for-7 at the plate and drove in four runs. Lauren Coleman contributed four hits, two in each game, along with three RBI and a double.
The wins extend Georgia State's conference winning streak to eight games.
The games also GSU's annual Pink Day in recognition of breast cancer awareness. The Panthers wore pink jerseys to show their support.
Game One: GSU 3, Drexel 2 (8 Innings)
Morrissey hit her second walk-off home run of the season to lead off the eighth inning as the Panthers defeated Drexel in their first extra-inning game of the season.
The solo homer came one inning after Drexel's Devon Metcalf led off the seventh inning with a homer to tie the game at two.
Drexel scored a run in the first on a bases-loaded error by Alana Thomas. The Panther starting pitcher then got a strikeout to strand the bases loaded.
Georgia State evened the score at one on a bases-loaded RBI ground out by Callie Alford. The Panthers loaded the bases on a Ashley Christy single, a Lauren Coleman double then Paige Nowacki was intentionally walked..
After Thomas surrendered the game-tying home run, Kaitlyn Medlam entered the game and got her 11th win of 2012 in relief. She gave up only one hit during two scoreless innings pitched.
Although neither team had trouble getting on base, they stranded a total of 23 runners on base between them, including 13 by Georgia State.
GSU benefited from eight walks in the game, including a school-high four to Nowacki. Drexel had four walks. The Panthers recorded nine hits in the game, while the Dragons had eight.
Game Two: GSU 8, Drexel 0 (5 Innings)
Georgia State scored four runs in the second, three in the fourth and one more in the fifth to defeat Drexel 8-0 in five innings of the second game. The game was the Panthers' 13th shutout win of 2012.
Christy led the Panthers with three RBI on a trio of singles and a pair of runs scored. The freshman outfielder had a two RBI hit in the second inning and drove in the final run of the game in the fifth inning.
Coleman also contributed three RBI for Georgia State. Her double in the fourth inning plated two runs for the Panthers. Whitney Phillips added two RBI and belted her first homer of 2012 during the fourth.
McCall Langford tossed a complete game shutout to earn her eighth win of the season. The junior limited the Dragons to only three hits, struck out five and lowered her ERA to 1.97.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series at noon on Sun., April 15 in Panthersville.
