Two More Wins for Softball to Conclude Buzz Classic

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — Georgia State (16-5) earned two more wins against Morehead State (4-8) and Furman (6-9) to finish play at the 2012 Buzz Classic Sunday morning.

Game 1: GSU 5, Morehead St 3

Whitney Phillips and Paige Nowacki each had a pair of hits and combined for three RBI in the game. Callie Alford and Audrey Mason both had bases loaded walks.

The Panthers were actually out hit in the game by the Eagles six hits to eight, but GSU used six walks in the game to their advantage. Morehead State also left nine runners on base, including twice stranding the bases loaded.

In the first inning, Georgia State scored all five of their runs on four hits, including a two RBI single by Phillips and a stand up double by Jessica Clifton.

Kaitlyn Medlam earned the win out of the bullpen for GSU after pitching 3.1 innings without allowing a hit. Erin Collins also pitched 2.1 innings in relief of starter McCall Langford.

Following the five run outburst, Morehead State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the second, however the Panther pitchers were able to limit the damage by leaving the bases loaded in both innings.

Game 2: GSU 2, Furman 0

Alana Thomas earned the complete game shutout over the Furman Paladins as Georgia State claimed their seventh shutout victory of the season.

The Panthers scored one in the first and the other in the third. Brenna Morrissey started the game with a single and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Clifton.

In the bottom of the third, Clifton scored the second run of the game on a bases loaded wild pitch. She reached on another single to start the frame and moved to third on a Lauren Coleman base knock.

Thomas held the Paladins to four hits during her 7.0 innings pitched, along with one walk and three strikeouts.

Georgia State travels to Jacksonville, Ala. next to play a road doubleheader against Jacksonville State on Thurs. March 8. The first game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
