WOODSTOCK, Ga. — On a rain-shortened second day of the Buzz Classic, Georgia State (14-5) earned its sixth shutout victory, a 4-0 win over Rhode Island Saturday evening at the Twin Creek Softball Complex.
The Panthers scored single runs in the first and second innings against the Atlantic-10 foe and then added their final two runs in the third inning off of a Maddy Stanton two-RBI single. Stanton earned her first two hits of the season in the game.
Alana Thomas earned the complete game shut out to improve her record to 4-1 on the season. Thomas registered a season-high seven strikeouts and did not surrender a walk to the 1-6 Rams.
In the first inning, Brenna Morrissey scored the first run of the game on a Paige Nowacki sacrifice fly to right field. Morrissey reached on a walk, advanced to second on an Ashley Christy sac bunt and to third on a Lauren Coleman single.
Jessica Clifton started the second with a stand up double. Whitney Phillips followed with a bunt single and Morrissey drove in Clifton with a single.
GSU loaded the bases in the third inning on a pair of singles from Callie Alford and Whitney Phillips and a Audrey Mason walk. Maddy Stanton then reached on an infield single that scored Alford and Mason.
Callie Alford singled in the third inning. Mason walked. Loaded the bases on a Phillips single. Maddy Stanton came through with her first hit on the season which drove in both Alford and Mason.
Heavy rain through the night caused tournament officials to cancel the early Saturday games of the Buzz Classic, including the Panthers' scheduled afternoon match-up with Elon.
Georgia State prepares to finish the Buzz Classic on Sunday, March 4, by taking on Morehead State at 10:00 a.m. and Furman at 12:00 p.m.
