Softball Splits a Pair of One Run Games Friday

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — The Georgia State softball team split a pair of one-run contests to start the 2012 Buzz Classic at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex Friday.

During the two games, five Panthers had multiple hits, including shortstop Brenna Morrissey with three singles to go along with an RBI and a walk.

Game 1: GSU 8, Tennessee Tech 7

After trailing early, Georgia State (13-4) mounted another comeback victory 8-7 over Tennessee Tech (6-9) Friday afternoon to begin the Buzz Classic.

The Panthers trailed 5-0 after the first inning and 7-2 after the fourth, but the Panthers scored five runs in the fifth inning and took the lead on Lauren Coleman's solo home run in the sixth.

A total of 14 walks in the game, including six in the first inning alone, helped to fuel both teams' offenses to score a total of 15 runs.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of five walks to score five runs on only two hits, both bases loaded doubles with two out in the bottom of the first.

Georgia State used three pitchers in the game after relievers Erin Collins and Kaitlyn Medlam relieved starter Alana Thomas. Medlam improves to 4-1 after earning the win while Collins held the Eagles two two runs during her 2.2 innings pitched.

Paige Nowacki had a run-scoring single and Lauren Coleman drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning to pull the Panthers within three runs. But Tennessee Tech plated to more runs in their half of the fourth inning to push their lead back to five.

Callie Alford's bases clearing double and Taylor Scarpantonio's two RBI single allowed Georgia State to tie the contest at seven runs a piece in the fifth inning. Coleman then hit a ball over the center field fence that would give GSU their first lead in the contest.

Game 2: GSU 2, Western Kentucky 3

Georgia State (13-5) dropped a one run ball game to Western Kentucky (11-3) to snap a six-game winning streak while WKU extended its winning streak to eight straight.

Pagie Nowacki drove in the game's first run with a single in the first inning. The Panthers retained the 1-0 lead until the Hilltoppers scored a pair in the top of the third inning.

Starter McCall Langford then gave up a solo home run to WKU's Kelsie Mattox. Langford was relieved in the fifth inning by Erin Collins, who kept the Hilltoppers from scoring again.

GSU scored again in the fifth inning to cut the lead to a single run. Brenna Morrissey's bloop single brought home pinch runner Carrie Williams from second. Williams was running for Shannyn Palazzo who singled to start the inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Georgia State attempted another come back by getting a double by Ashley Christy, but pinch hitter Chelsea Sparks struck out swinging to end the game.

Georgia State is scheduled to take on Elon and Rhode Island tomorrow, but heavy rains are in the forecast overnight, so all games are subject to change or cancellation.
