WOODSTOCK, Ga. — McCall Langford lost her perfect game bid with one out in the seventh inning, but she still managed to toss a complete-game shut-out as Georgia State (11-4) defeated Robert Morris (5-4) 5-0 Sunday morning.
Langford (3-2) retired the first nineteen Colonial batters in order before giving up two singles. She lowered her ERA to 2.47 on the season and added four strikeouts.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by freshman Shannyn Palazzo with two hits and three RBI. GSU notched a total of eight hits and four walks against Robert Morris.
In the first inning, Paige Nowacki hit her fourth home run of the season and Palazzo hit a two run double. Georgia State added a fifth run in the bottom of the third when Palazzo came through with an RBI single that scored Audrey Mason from second.
RMU reliever Nicole Sleith would limit the Panthers to only two hits after entering in the fifth inning, but the five runs would be more than enough for Langford and Georgia State.
The win was Georgia State's fourth in five games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial tournament on Feb. 24-26. After dropping the first contest 5-2 to Eastern Kentucky, the Panthers have now won four in a row.
At 4-1 on the weekend, Georgia State tied with Indiana for the best record in the tournament. Langford and Mason were also named to the All-Tournament team for their excellent performances.
Georgia State must content with No. 20 Georgia Tech Wed. Feb. 29 in Panthersville in order to extend their winning streak. The following weekend, the Panthers return to the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock for the Buzz Classic hosted by Tech March 2-4.
