PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. -- The Georgia State softball (7-2) team earned a pair of shutouts to cap a rain-abbreviated second day of the Panther Invitational Sunday.
McCall Langford pitched a complete game shut-out against IUPUI and Audrey Mason had three RBIs and three hits, including a double and a home run to lead the Panthers.
Game 1: GSU 7, EIU 0
GSU struck early putting up five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. In the inning, Mason's double scored two and Whitney Phillips and Christina Reed each added run-scoring singles.
Back-to-back solo home runs by Callie Alford and Mason in the fifth inning pushed the Panthers' lead to 7-0. Alford also had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI on the game.
Brenna Morrissey also extended her hitting streak to seven games to start the season. Morrissey is tied with three others for the team lead with eight hits in 2012.
GSU starting pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam gave up only one hit, a bloop single in the fourth inning, during her 6.0 shut-out innings. Medlam improved to 2-0 on the season and recorded eight strikeouts in the game.
Game 2: GSU 1, IUPUI 0
Langford got the upperhand of the pitcher's duel, getting four strikeouts and allowing only three hits to earn her first win of the season.
The sole run of the game came courtesy of a Taylor Scarpantonio double that scored Carrie Williams from second base. Williams reached on a single and stole her way into scoring position.
The Panthers notched six hits and had subsequent opportunities to add to their lead, but stranded eight runners on base. IUPUI started Nikki Thomas fanned nine GSU batters in the game over her 6.0 innings pitched.
