ATLANTA – The Georgia State volleyball team took the first set but fell to William & Mary 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.
With the loss the Panthers fell to 3-15 overall and 1-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. William & Mary improved to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in the CAA.
The Panthers tied the first set at 25-25 on a kill by freshman Sydney Hunsley. GSU fought hard through the remainder of the first game as a block assist by Andrea Book and Andrea Ezell finally sealed the first set for GSU 29-27.
In the second set the Tribe offense took over and held off GSU for a 25-13 win. William & Mary got its offense rolling again in the third set for a 25-11 win.
In the fourth and final set, the Panthers played hard and pulled within one, 20-19, on a kill by Ezell. A kill by Freeman made it a 23-22 set in favor of William & Mary but the Tribe was able to hold on for a 25-22 win.
Ezell had a strong performance with seven block assists, three solo blocks, and five kills on the night. Freeman and freshman Dede Bohannon led the Panthers with eight kills with Freeman also leading the team with 21 digs.
Freshman Natalia Nieto posted a team-best 17 assists.
The Panthers return to action Friday, October 19 as they host conference rival James Madison at 7 p.m. GSU closes out the home stand against George Mason Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m.
