ATLANTA -- The Georgia State softball team (4-4) suffered a pair of day one losses at the Panther Invitational falling to Lipscomb, 4-0, and Memphis, 3-2.
Day two of the Panther Invitational gets underway at 10 a.m. when Memphis battles Lipscomb. The Panthers will face off with Appalachian State in Sunday's game two.
GAME FOUR - Memphis 3, Georgia State 2
Memphis (5-2) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 2-0 deficit as the Tigers defeated Georgia State, 3-2.
The Panthers opened up a 2-0 lead on the strength of a Tiffany Bess homer in the second and a Paige Nowacki single in the sixth. However, the Tigers came roaring back in the sixth. Starting pitcher McCall Langford (0-2), who until the bottom of the sixth had allowed just five hits, gave up a single and a double to put runners at the corners with Ashleigh King coming up to the plate. King promptly singled, plating one run. With two outs, Alyssa Palmieri knocked a two-run single that proved to be the gamewinner.
Tiger pitcher Janelle Valle (1-1) picked up the win, with Carly Hummel claiming the save.
Bess led the way for the Panthers, knocking her first homer of the season. Nowacki went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
GAME TWO - Lipscomb 4, Georgia State 0
Lipscomb (2-5) pitcher Whitney Kiihnl tossed a three hitter while striking out 12 GSU batters, as the Lady Bison claimed a 4-0 victory over the Panthers in game two.
The Panthers had few chances to score runs against Kiihnl, a all-American in 2010, but GSU produced a bases loaded opportunity in the top of the sixth. After a Lauren Jones' double and a Nowacki single, sophomore Whitney Phillips was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, a pair of strikeouts by Megan Kallatsa and Bess ended the threat for GSU.
Kristen Sturdivant's two-run homer in the bottom of the second provided Lipscomb with the early lead. The Lady Bison tallied two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Breanna Thurman's single scored Courtney Billington.
Jones, Nowacki and Bess provided the only hits for GSU. Junior Alana Thomas (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.
GAME ONE - Appalachian State 4, Lipscomb 0
ASU pitcher Hannah Dow (1-2) hurled a one hitter as the Mountaineers won game one, 4-0, over Lipscomb.
GAME THREE - Memphis 1, Appalachian State 0
Carly Hummel (4-0) threw a two hitter as Memphis defeated Appalachian State, 1-0, in game three of the Panther Invitational.
