Defense Scores Second Straight Shutout

Heidi Blankenship notched her seventh shutout of the year, tops in the Colonial Athletic Association, as Georgia State (7-4-6, 1-3-5) tied Delaware (5-5-5, 2-3-4) 0-0 in double overtime in Newark, Del. Friday night.

"We had a lot of half chances again. When we go forward with one little pass or dribble, they would have a sacrificing slide to get it out," said Georgia State head coach Domenic Martelli. "Their goalkeeper didn't really have a big save, but they were holding their breath. Delaware was a very good soccer team, we had to play very good team defense to neutralize them. When they were dominant we had to play really well to keep them out of the goal."

"We're a little banged up," said Martelli. "When you look at some of the wear and tear we've had, the teams were playing, and we've become a little bit defensive. When you're on the road, it's tough to play, so it's a great result to come away with a tie against a very good team."

Blankenship stopped six shots on the night, pushing her scoreless streak to 252 minutes, a career best. The Indianapolis, Ind. native has allowed only three goals over the last seven games, a streak she has never equaled in her career.

"For the first half they were the most physical we've played," said Martelli. "We settled down in the second half and both overtimes. Heidi had a big save off of a short corner, one of their best shots of the night, and she came up with a great save. She was solid again tonight on crosses. We had great communication."

The Panthers have only allowed 11 goals in conference play with two games remaining. The school-record for goals allowed against CAA opponents is 18, set in 2006.

Excluding Georgia State's 2-6 loss to William & Mary, the defense has surrendered only five goals in seven matches. Last season, the Panthers gave up 25 goals in conference.

"We're unfortunate that some of those earlier ties could have been win," said Martelli, "but tonight was different, a very good result. When you look at all the results from the conference, even just tonight, you can see it's a crazy conference. When you look at the effort our girls have given during our conference, if you take away a half against William & Mary, we've had eight or nine really great games."

Blankenship moved into a tie for third with Jennifer Espinal for career shutouts (10), five away from taking over the all-time lead. The junior leads the CAA in saves (115) and shutouts (7).

Georgia State's best chance against Delaware came on freshman Jocelyn Baker's shot in the 70th minute.

"We're not putting up big numbers, but people are holding their breath when we move forward," said Martelli. "I'm sure the girls are upset, but I'm not. I feel very positive about what we're doing. Anytime you can get a point on the road it's important. Everybody that went in there played well. Our girls really battled."

The Panthers face Drexel next, with kickoff set for 12 p.m. Sunday in Philadelphia, Penn. Live stats will be linked to www.GeorgiaStateSports.com.
