Volleyball Falls to Delaware in Four

Despite another near triple-double by junior Ashley Jones, the Georgia State volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20) to Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena. With 28 digs, redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell became just the seventh Panther to earn 1,000 in her career.

The tight match featured seven lead changes, including four in the fourth set, along with 20 ties, 13 of which occurred in the final set.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 15-7 and 3-4 in the CAA. Delaware improved to 14-5 and 7-0 in the CAA and have now won 10 straight matches.

Cantrell, who now has 1,013 digs for her career, moved to within 12 of Beth Van Fleet (1995-98) for sixth on the all-time list.

Jones, who has already scored five triple-doubles this season, fell just one dig shy of her sixth triple-double of the season. The junior finished with 15 kills, 12 assists and nine digs, adding four total blocks.

The Panthers finished the match with nine total blocks.

Freshman Jamiee Freeman fell just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs, while senior Jocelyn Waldern scored eight kills and 10 digs.

Redshirt-sophomore Vineece Verdun fell one block shy of a career high with six, while sophomore Muki Kangwa added three, along with eight kills and six digs.

Kangwa finished the match hitting a team high .412 and a pair of aces. The sophomore entered the weekend among the top 20 in the NCAA in service aces.

Sophomore Chelsea Perry finished the match with 27 assists and five digs as the Panthers finished with 73 as a team, their third highest total of the season. Perry, who leads the CAA in services aces per set and was among the top 15 in the NCAA coming to the weekend, added two more in the loss.

Junior Rachel Boryc added five kills for State.

Delaware was led by Kim Stewart's double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs. Jess Chason added a double-double of 53 assists and 16 digs, while Michelle LaLonde added 13 kills.

It was just the third set in conference play that the Blue Hens have dropped this season.

The Panthers will begin a six-match road trip on Tuesday their final non-conference match of the year, traveling to Macon to face former Atlantic Sun Conference rival Mercer at 6 p.m. Live stats and will be provided via GeorgiaStateSports.com.
