Hempstead, N.Y. ? Georgia State (37-17, 0-1 CAA Tournament) battled against James Madison (31-20, 1-0 CAA Tournament) in the first game of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, Thursday, May 8, but fell in the top of the seventh, as JMU's Kaitlyn Wernsing hit a two-run home run to put the Dukes on top, 2-1.
Sophomore infielder
Rachel Cunningham finished the day batting 2-for-3, blasting her fifth homer of the season. Outfielders
Lauren Jones and
Holly Willis connected with a pair of singles, the only other hits on the day.
Right-hander Mills took the loss for State, bringing her record to 14-5. She adds five to her strikeout total (163), allowing only four hits and two walks through seven innings of work.
JMU hurler Meredith Felts garners the win, completing the game with seven strike-outs, allowing four hits and two walks.
Each team went scoreless through four and a half, only collecting two hits a piece.
With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the fourth, Cunningham, a sophomore infielder from Alpharetta, Ga., ripped a shot over the left field fence to put the Panthers on the board, 1-0.
The Dukes answered back in the top of the seventh, as catcher Julia Dominguez led off the inning with a single to up the middle. Two batters later, Wernsing smashed her first collegiate homerun, giving the Dukes the lead and the win with a score of 2-1. Wernsing finished 2-for-3 on the day, adding a single in the second inning.
Georgia State looks to face number four seed Towson tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in the first game of the losers bracket. The winner of that game will go on to play the loser of the game between number one seed Hofstra and number three seed James Madison, to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
