The Georgia State softball team (18-5) dropped a pair of pitcher's duels against Florida State University (16-9), 0-1, and 0-3, in the final day of the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. on Sunday, leaving the Panthers in second place for the tournament, sophomores Danielle Roddy and Lily Skelton, along with freshman Catherine Lee earned All-Tournament Team honors for their performances over the weekend.
In the first game against FSU, the Panthers did not put a run on the board as they could only muster two hits against senior Seminole pitcher Tiffany McDonald. State freshman pitcher Alicia Mills (8-2) held her own through five innings, until FSU shortstop Ashley Stager doubled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Seminoles a 1-0 victory. Georgia State got the tying run on second in the top of the seventh, but a line drive out snuffed out the would-be rally.
Meeting again in the Championship game, the Panthers could not push across a run as the host Seminoles took the title, 3-0. Danielle Roddy, Lauren Jones, Rachel Cunningham Rebecca Roles and Holly Willis each had a hit for State. Senior pitcher Ashley Cowan (3-1) held FSU through three innings until senior first basemen Brittany Osmon hit her fourth home run of the season, putting the Seminoles up 1-0. It would be Osmon again in the fifth to put two more runs on the board as she doubled in her 17th and 18th RBIs of the season.
Georgia State had won its two opening round games on Saturday by defeating the University of Connecticut of the Big East and Appalachian State of the Southern Conference.
For the weekend, Danielle Roddy had six hits, while Catherine Lee, Lauren Jones and Holly Willis each accumulated five hits for the Panthers. Shortstop Rachel Cunningham had four hits for the weekend, as did Lily Skelton.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, March 11, when they host a doubleheader against the Bears from Mercer at 3 p.m. at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville.
