? The Georgia State softball team defeated Dayton 8-2 and Tennessee State, as
senior Jessica Gowin hit a two run home run to put the Panthers on top of the
Tigers 3-1, improving State's record to 11-1.
Gowin ended the day going 4-for-6, including a home run, 2
RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Senior Ashley Cowan completed the first game against Dayton,
improving her record to 3-0, allowing only six hits, two runs while fanning
eight batters.
Alicia Mills started in the circle the second game,
improving her record to 4-0, allowing just five hits and one earned run while
striking out eight.
Junior Holly Willis went 3-for-6 on the day with a double,
four RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Sophomore Danielle Roddy also batted 3-for-4
with a double and two RBIs.
In the first game against Dayton,
the Panthers went up 5-0 in the second when Rachel Cunningham led off the
inning with a hard hit single up the middle.
Jessica Gowin followed her lead with another line drive single up the middle,
putting runners at first and second. Rebecca Roles was then safe on bunt to the
pitcher, loading the bases. Willis came through with a long double to the left
field gap, scoring all three runners.
State continued the rally when Roddy singled right side, scoring Willis
from second. Catherine Lee walked putting
runners on first and second. Lauren Jones
smashed a single up the middle, scoring Roddy, giving the Panthers a 5-0 start.
The Panthers pushed across two more runs in the bottom third
when Roles double to right field gap to start the inning. Willis singled to
right center, scoring Roles. Willis stole second, her frist of tow in the game.
With two outs and one on, Natasha Berry hit a hard grounder to shortstop
causing an error, allowing Willis to score from second.
In the fifth, Willis legged out a bunt single to third, and stole
second on the next pitch. Roddy smashed a double over the center fielder,
scoring Willis, giving the Panthers an 8-1 lead.
In the second game against the Tennessee
State, the Panthers went ahead in
the bottom of the second when senior Jessica Gowin belted a two run home run
over the right field fence, scoring Cunningham who had reached on a walk.
With two outs, Cunningham singled up the middle, starting
State's rally. Gowin lined a single down
the right field line, advancing Cunningham to third. Roles came through with a line drive single
up the middle, scoring Cunningham and giving the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to
Statesboro, Ga.
to face Georgia
Southern at 3 p.m.
