State Shuts-Out UT Martin in Championship, 6-0

Panthersville, Ga. ? Senior Ashley Cowan tossed a four-hit shutout and Lily Skelton homered and drove in three runs as Georgia State defeated UT Martin, 6-0, in the championship game of the GSU First Pitch Classic Sunday at Bob Heck Field.

Cowan struck out three and walked only two to earn her second victory of the season as the Panthers improved to 4-0 with the win. UT Martin fell to 1-3.

Senior Jessica Gowin and teammate Natasha Berry went 2-for-3 with two singles each.

Both teams were scoreless through three and a half innings. State started the attack in the bottom of the fourth when Danielle Roddy reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop. Berry legged out a bunt single, allowing Roddy to advance to third. With one out, freshman Lauren Jones hit a line drive to the right field gap, scoring both runners.

State rallied again in the sixth inning when Rachel Cunningham singled to left, putting Catherine Lee on second, who had reached base earlier on a fielder's choice. Gowin then drove in a run on a hard hit single to right field. With two outs and two strikes, Skelton belted her three-run home run, her first of the season, over the left field fence, putting the Panthers up 6-0.

State returns to action Tuesday, hosting a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Savannah State at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville, Ga.
