CLEMSON, S.C.--Redshirt freshman Audrey Cantrell had a match-high 13 digs, but the Georgia State volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-16, 30-20, 30-23) to Clemson on Saturday at the Clemson Classic.
"Clemson did an exceptional job with their service game of keeping us off-balance," said Panthers head coach Mike Webster. "We didn't do enough with our serves to keep them out of rhythm."
The Tigers opened the match with a 7-2 run to take control of the first game. State was unable to get any offensive momentum going, as Clemson took a 10-point lead at 19-9 and cruised to the 30-16 victory in the first frame.
In game two, the Panthers rushed out to an 11-6 lead to stun the 874 orange-clad partisans in attendance. But Clemson would respond with a 14-3 run to cruise to the win in the second stanza.
In the finale, the Panthers trailed 26-19 but scored three quick points to make the game close. A block by fifth-year senior Ana Paula Ferreira and redshirt freshman Lindsay Casey started the spurt. Junior Michelle Trimble followed with a kill to pull State within five. Following a timeout by Clemson, State came back with the next two points. An ace by Ferreira made the score 26-22, and a Clemson hitting error pulled the Panthers within three.
But Clemson would close with a 4-0 run to end the game. The Tigers hit .364 for the match, compared to just .156 for the Panthers.
Georgia State will return to action tonight in the finale of the Clemson Classic when they face Kent State in a battle for second place standing in the tournament. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m.
