Panthers Fly Over Mountaineers

CLEMSON, S.C.--Sophomore Jocelyn Waldern had 10 kills and seven total blocks as the Georgia State volleyball team (8-5) defeated Appalachian State 3-0 (30-20, 30-28, 30-20) Friday at the Clemson Classic.

"This is by far the most efficient we've been this season offensively," said Panthers head coach Mike Webster, who saw his team sweep its second consecutive match.  "We did a very good job of limiting our errors.  Our passes were crisp and allowed us to get into our system."

Georgia State led 18-15 in the first game, but finished the frame off by winning 12 of the last 17 points.  The largest lead for the Panthers was the final margin, as a block by fifth-year senior Ana Paula Ferreira and junior Michelle Trimble gave the Panthers game point at 29-19.  ASU fought off the first, but a kill by junior Liz Schaab gave the team in blue the 3-0 victory.

The Panthers led for most of the second game, but Appalachian State mounted a late rally to make it close.  State led 20-13, but after a service ace, the Mountaineers tied the game at 28-all.  But with momentum wearing black and gold, the team in blue swiped the game right back.  A substitution before the next point paid off, as a block by Waldern and the just-entered Rachel Boryc gave the Panthers game point.  From there, a hitting error gave the Panthers game two 30-28.

The final game was all Panthers.  Appalachian State had its only lead of the match when they scored the first point of the game, but the Panthers scored the next three on a kill by Ferreira and two errors.  With the lead at 15-13, a 6-0 run by the Panthers sealed the match.  Waldern and senior Amy Lusk each had a kill to start the run, then a block by the pair sent Appalachian State into a timeout.  Waldern and Lusk each had a kill off the timeout, then a service ace by freshman Audrey Cantrell capped the run with the Panthers up 21-13.  The Panthers would finish the match off in style, as freshman Alysa Long tallied a kill, then freshman libero Emily Dewey had two service aces to give the Panthers a 30-20 win in the game and a 3-0 win in the match.

Ferreira had a team-high 12 kills, while Lusk had eight kills and a match-high 14 digs.  Sophomore setter Noelle Boyd had 40 assists, giving her 95 for the last two matches.

The Panthers will return to action Saturday when they face host Clemson at 11 a.m., and Kent State at 6:00 p.m.
