Pelt Sets Hits Mark in Loss

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga.--Senior first baseman Charlie Pelt set a Georgia State record for career hits with a pair of singles, giving him 234 hits for his career, but the Georgia State baseball team fell to James Madison 15-9 in Colonial Athletic Association play from The Field.

"Charlie's had a great career at Georgia State," said Panthers head coach Greg Frady.  "He's a powerful player for us offensively and really in every other area of the game.  I'm sure this will be the first of many records he sets for us."

Georgia State (20-23, 9-10) fell behind 5-0 after James Madison chased Panthers starter Drew Grant.  State came back with three runs in the fourth inning, plating runs on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Bennett and singles by Eric Suttle and Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas.  Also in the fourth, Pelt set his second career record when he was hit by a pitch for the 25th time in his four years as a Panther.

JMU came back with two in the fifth to make the score 7-3.  Then the flood gates opened for both teams in the seventh, as both squads scored six runs in the frame.  The big blows for JMU came on a three-run homer by Davis Stoneburner and a two-run shot by Matt Browning.  Georgia State started their scoring in the frame with an RBI double by Aeden McQueary.  A ground out by Chase Childers scored Luke Gordon to make it 13-5.  After Bradley Logan was hit by a pitch, a Suttle single brought in two runs to make it 13-7.  The final two runs of the inning came home when Rochon-Salvas tripled into right-center to plate a pair.

But James Madison would come back with a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth to seal the victory and give the visiting team the 15-9 win.

Kurt Houck improved to 4-6 on the year after going 6.2 innings for the Dukes and giving up eight runs on 10 hits.  The win was the 300th at JMU for head coach Joe "Spanky" MacFarland.

Grant was saddled with the loss for the Panthers after giving up five runs in two innings.  Bobby Bennett, Adam Bowling, Tyler Allen, David Ferrer, and Dustin Carder all pitched in relief for State.

The Dukes outhit the Panthers 23-14.  Suttle and Rochon-Salvas combined for five hits and six RBIs from the first two positions in the batting order for the home team.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at The Field.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
