Softball Drops Mid-Week Twin Bill

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. (04/25/07) ? Georgia State (28-26, 7-7 CAA) dropped a twin bill to No. 20 Georgia Tech (46-13, 11-3 ACC) at Bob Heck Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers took early leads in both games before bowing 6-2 in game one and 4-1 in the nightcap.

 

In the second frame of the opening game, Stephanie Butler plated Caitlin Lever as Georgia Tech drew first blood.

Rachel Cunningham (Alpharetta, Ga./South Forysth) dropped a two-RBI single into center field for State in the third inning and State led 2-1 after three innings.

 

The Yellow Jackets' offense  rallied as they scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Tech plated another run in the seventh inning and held on for the 6-2 win.

Chelsey Morgan (2-8) took the loss for the Panthers. Whitney Humphreys (20-5) grabbed the win for the Yellow Jackets.

 

In the nightcap, State recorded the first run when Lily Skelton (McDonough, Ga./Union Grove) scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. Pitcher Madi Gore (Acworth, Ga./Kell) held a no-hitter until the fifth frame, retiring the first 13 batters she faced and had a shutout through the first five frames against the Yellow Jackets.

 

After a single and a stolen base by Georgia Tech's Aileen Morales, she scored the tying run on a single. Whitney Haller followed with a two-run homer. After a pop up by the next batter, Caitlin Lever tacked on another blast over the center field fence to five the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 advantage and the eventual victory.

Madi Gore (17-9) picked up the loss for State, pitching 5.1 innings. Tiffany Johnson (16-6) collected the victory for Tech.


The Panthers will travel to Towson this weekend for a three-game league series in the battle for fourth place in the CAA. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon on Saturday, April 28 and the series finale will be Sunday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m.
