Softball Splits Twin Bill

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. (03/21/07) ? Softball freshman Lily Skelton (McDonough, Ga./Union Grove) hit a bases clearing three-run double as the Georgia State (19-14) downed Furman (10-14-1) 4-1 in the first game on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Heck Field.  State fell 5-2 in the nightcap.

 

This was the fourth and fifth meetings between the two teams.  The Panthers had defeated the Paladins three times earlier this season.

 

Furman reached the board first when Amber Kiser scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.  It would be the Paladins only run of the game.

 

Skelton hit a double to center field scoring three runners in the second frame to give State a 3-1 lead.  Rachel Cunningham (Alpharetta, Ga./South Forysth) hit a single to left field scoring Alison Bradford (McDonough, Ga./Henry County) in the third inning extending the lead to 4-1.

 

Madi Gore (11-4) collected the win for the Panthers.  Gore fanned nine batters in seven innings while facing on 23 batters.  Lana Mackey (5-6) picked up the loss for the Paladins.

 

In the nightcap, the Paladins scored five runs to take a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning.  Up until the sixth inning, it was a pitchers game as neither team could get a runner across the plate.

 

Megan Jaudon, who led off with a double, was plated on a Lana Mackey RBI double.  Christina Campoli  doubled plating Mackey.  After a ground out, Blake Murray followed with an RBI single.  Amber Kiser hit an in-the-park home run to give Furman a 5-0 advantage.

 

Alison Bradford scored for State on a throwing error and Jessica Gowin (Cohutta, Ga./Northwest Whitfield) crossed on a wild pitch as State could only muster two runs in the game.  Furman held on for the 5-2 win by shutting out the Panthers in the seventh frame.

 

Ashley Cowan (5-3) took the loss for the Panthers striking out four batters and forcing 11 ground outs in 5.2 innings.  Blake Murray (5-7) grabbed the win for the Paladins pitching a complete game with five strikeouts.

 

Georgia State will open its conference schedule this weekend on the road at George Mason in Fairfax, Va.  Colonial Athletic Association play is a three-game series played in two days.  The doubleheader will begin on March 24 at 12:00 p.m.
