Panthers Battle but Tripped by Hofstra

ATLANTA--Sophomore Michelle Trimble had a team-high 11 kills, but the Georgia State volleyball team fell to Hofstra 3-1 (30-19, 24-30, 30-25, 30-25) Friday night at the Sports Arena.

"We did a lot of things well to give ourselves a chance to win tonight, but Hofstra's service game gave us a lot of trouble and helped them get the important points they needed to get the win."

Georgia State scored the first point of the match, but Hofstra quickly gained the advantage and almost never looked back.  The Pride extended the lead to eight at 18-10, but the Panthers rallied back with an 8-2 thanks to a bevy of blocks and Hofstra attack errors to make it 20-18.  But that would be as close as State would get, as Hofstra went on a 10-1 run to end the game to take the frame 30-19.

The second game would be much different for State.  The Panthers hit a match-high .250 for the stanza to win 30-24.  State led by just a single point 21-20, but in a reversal of fortune, it was the Panthers that went on the deciding run.    Three straight points during the run on a kill and a service ace by Ana Paula Ferreira and a kill by Amy Lusk helped State to open the game up.  After a Hofstra timeout down 27-23, a second Ferreira ace pushed the lead to five.  Hofstra would take the next point, but back-to-back kills for Trimble and Lusk closed the game out for the Panthers.

In the pivotal third game, Georgia State had the game in reach, but saw the Pride snatch it away.  State led 21-16 when the Pride went on a dramatic 14-4 run to take the game.  A 6-0 spurt during that period enabled Hofstra to take a 22-21 lead, and Hofstra would never trail again.

The final game was even through the first 32 points at 16-all, but the Panthers saw the Pride go on a 6-1 run to take control.  Hofstra had 21 kills in the fourth game to just eight for State as the Pride held on for a tough win.

Both teams finished with 14 blocks, with Leah Tenney having eight total (two solo and six assisted) to lead State.  Ferreira had the highest point total for the Panthers with 13, while Trimble had 11 kills and three assisted blocks for 12.5.  Senior Christen Garcia had 15 digs to lead State, while Lusk had 11 and Ferreira had 10.

Hofstra had 12 service aces for the match and three players with double-digit kill totals, led by Elizabeth Curley's 14.

Georgia State (6-12, 3-5 CAA) now faces Northeastern this Sunday at the Sports Arena in a very important CAA match.  Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
