The Georgia State volleyball team may have had a sense of d?j? vu in Williamsburg, Va., Saturday night. In 2005, the Panthers went to five games against the Tribe of William & Mary, falling 3-2. In 2006, the Panthers also lost in five, losing the deciding game 17-15.
Junior Amy Lusk had 23 digs and 24 kills for the Panthers in the loss, as State fell to 3-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Ana Paula Ferreira and sophomore Michelle Trimble each had double-doubles as well, with the redshirt junior collecting 16 kills and 13 digs and Trimble getting 12 kills and 13 digs.
Neither of State's game wins came with ease, as the Panthers took game two 30-27 and game three 32-30. In the second game, the Panthers led 27-26, but the Panthers extended the lead on kills by sophomore Leah Tenney and Ferreira. After one game point opportunity evaporated on a service error, a Tribe hitting error gave State the game. The third game would prove to be even tighter. Down 25-24, back-to-back service aces by freshman Jocelyn Waldern gave the Panthers a 26-25 lead. The teams would then trade points back and forth until reaching 30-all. Lusk provided the Panthers their third game point opportunity with a kill at 31-30. Freshman Noelle Boyd then followed with a kill to give State a 32-30 game three win.
William & Mary took game four 30-24 to set the stage for the fifth and final frame. State nabbed a 13-11 lead but the Tribe scored the next three points to earn a match point opportunity, 14-13. A block by Ferreira and Lusk helped the Panthers fight off one match point, but a Tribe kill gave the home team another opportunity. A kill by sophomore Leah Tenney tied the score again at 15-all. But the 29th and 30th kills of the match for Abbi Owens gave William & Mary the 17-15 win.
Boyd had a career-high 66 assists for the Panthers, giving her 107 for the last two matches. Senior Christen Garcia had 23 digs.
The Panthers will return to action Tuesday when they face in-state rival Mercer. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
Notes: Ferreira cleared the 200 kill total for the season...Trimble now has exactly 100 kills...The Panthers are now 3-2 in five-game matches this season...Trimble's double-double was the first of her career.
