ATLANTA - Georgia State University head women's basketball coach Lea Henry is currently in Denver serving as an assistant coach for the United States' Junior World Championship Qualifying Team, where she helped finalize the 12-player roster on Monday.
Henry, along with head coach Ceal Barry (University of Colorado), assistant coach Carolyn Peck (University of Florida) and the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee decided on the final roster. Thirty-one players attended the first round of trials from June 20-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo., before 15 finalists for the squad had been working out in Denver since July 22.
The 12 players making up the 18-and-under team are Erika Arriaran (Norco, Calif.), Essence Carson (Paterson, N.J.), Marissa Coleman (Washington, D.C.), Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa.), Charde' Houston (San Diego, Calif.), Erlana Larkins (Riviera Beach, Fla.), Courtney Paris (Piedmont, Calif.), Candace Parker (Naperville, Ill.), Angelica Robinson (Marietta, Ga.), Abigail Waner (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Candice Wiggins (Poway, Calif.) and Christina Wirth (Chandler, Ariz.).
After practicing in Denver for a few more days, the USA Junior National Team will head down to Miami for training on July 30-31. From there, the team will travel to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Americas Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament from Aug. 4-8. The top three squads at the eight-team tournament will receive berths to the 2005 Junior World Championship, slated for next July in Tunisia.
