ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State cut into a late deficit but could not overcome Wofford's four-run middle innings, falling 7-4 Tuesday evening at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Panthers drop to 15-19 on the season, while Wofford improves to 22-11.
After Wofford opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, Georgia State responded immediately in the bottom half. Austin Killingsworth doubled to right-center to spark the offense and later scored on an RBI single from Sam Silas. Silas then came around to score on a throwing error, giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Wofford answered in the third to tie the game before taking control in the fourth. The Terriers used three walks to load the bases and pushed across two runs to regain the lead at 4-2.
The visitors added to the advantage in the fifth inning, scoring twice on a single and a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 6-2. Wofford added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, stretching the margin to 7-2.
Georgia State threatened in the sixth after putting multiple runners on base, but was unable to capitalize. The Panthers broke through again in the seventh when Austin Sellers and Hunter Carlson worked walks before John Beverley delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to 7-4.
The Panthers were held in check the rest of the way, as Wofford's bullpen closed out the final two innings to secure the win.
Beverley led Georgia State with two hits and two RBIs, while Silas added two hits and an RBI. Killingsworth finished with a double and a run scored as part of an eight-hit effort for the Panthers.
On the mound, Brian Crooms allowed two runs over 3.0 innings in the start. Joshua Evans (1-2) was charged with the loss, and the Panthers used five pitchers in the contest.
Georgia State will return to action Friday, April 10, opening a three-game series against James Madison at 6:00 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
