Panthers Complete Comeback to Take Series Opener

ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State erased a five-run deficit and exploded for nine runs over the final four innings, defeating James Madison 10-5 in the series opener Friday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers improve to 16-19 overall and 5-8 in the Sun Belt, while James Madison falls to 16-16 overall and 6-7 in the Sun Belt.

James Madison jumped out early, using solo home runs in the first and a two-run shot in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Dukes added two more runs in the fifth on another home run, extending the advantage to 5-0.

Georgia State broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hunter Carlson singled, and Cole Griffith doubled to put two runners in scoring position before Austin Sellers was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Nick Garagozzo followed with an RBI single, and John Beverley drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Sam Silas capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

The Panthers continued to chip away in the seventh. Sellers was hit by a pitch again and later scored on an RBI single from Beverley to tie the game at 5-5.

Georgia State took control in the bottom of the eighth inning with a five-run outburst. Austin Killingsworth doubled to start the rally before Carlson singled to put runners on the corners. Griffith delivered an RBI double to give the Panthers their first lead, and a balk allowed another run to score. Adam Haber added an RBI double, and Beverley capped the inning with his third RBI of the night. An error later in the inning brought home the final run to make it 10-5.

Beverley led the Panthers offensively with three hits and three RBIs, while Griffith added two doubles and an RBI. Carlson finished with two hits and scored twice, and Haber added a double and an RBI as part of an 11-hit performance.

On the mound, Michael Caruso (4-4) earned the win in relief, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing three runs and striking out seven. Hunter Atkins started and allowed two runs over 2.1 innings.

Georgia State will continue the series against the Dukes Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
