ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State completed the series sweep with a late-inning rally, scoring three runs in the seventh and pushing across the go-ahead run in the eighth to defeat James Madison 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Panthers improve to 18-19 overall and 7-8 in Sun Belt play, securing their first conference sweep of the season.
James Madison struck first with a run in the third inning and extended its lead in the fifth with a two-run single, building a 3-0 advantage.
Georgia State broke through in the sixth inning when Austin Killingsworth delivered an RBI double to score John Beverley and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Panthers took control in the seventh inning with a three-run rally. Adam Haber reached on an error before Brandon Davis delivered a pinch-hit single to put two runners on. Wills Maginnis followed with an RBI single, and a pair of wild pitches allowed two more runs to score, giving Georgia State a 4-3 lead.
James Madison answered in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4.
Georgia State responded immediately in the bottom half. Hunter Carlson was hit by a pitch and advanced into scoring position before a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Austin Sellers then reached on an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score and give the Panthers a 5-4 lead.
Will Bartkoski (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings while allowing one run and striking out two. Cole Roberts started and went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out eight.
Despite recording just four hits, Georgia State capitalized on opportunities throughout the game. Killingsworth drove in a run with his double, while Maginnis added an RBI. Beverley reached base twice and scored a run.
Georgia State will return to action Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex, hosting West Georgia.
