ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State responded to an early deficit with a four-run fourth inning and rode strong bullpen pitching to a 5-2 win over West Georgia on Tuesday evening at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The Panthers improve to 19-19 on the season.
West Georgia struck first with back-to-back solo home runs in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Georgia State answered in the fourth inning with its biggest offensive surge of the night. Wills Maginnis singled to start the rally before Cole Griffith doubled to bring home the Panthers' first run. John Beverley followed with an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch to give Georgia State its first lead of the game at 3-2. Sam Silas added a single, and Hunter Carlson capped the inning with an RBI double to extend the advantage to 4-2.
After the fourth inning, pitching took control for the Panthers. Nicholas Holbrook delivered a strong relief outing, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out three to earn his first win of the season.
Georgia State added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Maginnis worked a walk, stole third, and came home on a sacrifice fly from Beverley to push the lead to 5-2.
Jacob Crews closed out the game with 2.0 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.
Maginnis led the Panthers with two hits and two runs scored, while Beverley drove in two runs. Griffith and Carlson each added extra-base hits as part of a seven-hit effort.
Georgia State's pitching held West Georgia scoreless after the first inning, combining to allow just five hits in the game.
